I am truly confused that President Obama won't veto the credit card legislation that has the provision to allow guns into national parks buried in it. I understand that getting such bills to the gavel is a lot of work, but I fear not vetoing this ...

This is so right on, Chuck. When will the US start to look at what we have done to other countries as well as our own people? And it didn't start with Bush either. I recommend Howard Zinn's, "A people's history of the Unites States" to learn more....

Had we all been teaspooning these last ten years, perhaps we would not see the misery, unemployment and underemployment we are seeing today. I think about Lech Walesa, Mandela, the lone protester in Tiananmen Square where unknown hundreds were sla...

Thanks so much for your post Vicky! It is amazing when a country has been suffocated for so long, how quickly breaths of fresh air renew the soul. Hope is indeed rising! Soulfully, Chuck

Heavy Burdens, Hard To Bear

“They preach, but do not practice. They bind
heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on
men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.”

An Iranian appeals court announced last week that it was reducing the sentence and ordering the immediate release of Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi, who was convicted by an Iranian court last month of spying for the U.S. and sentenced to eight years in prison.

Saberi's release is good news, as her conviction was based o… Continue

Millions of Little Teaspoons

“I think the world is going to be saved by millions of small things. Too many things can go wrong when they get big.”

Now there’s a mouthful of truth times 6.7 billion! The sage is Pete Seeger at his 90th birthday celebration last weekend.

One of the most tempting cynicisms in life is, “I’m just one person, I can’t do much of anything.”

Bruce Springsteen headlined the concert honoring Seeger. He strummed his guitar before performing and mused.

“As Pete and I traveled to Washington for Presid… Continue

Bringing In The Sheaves

"Do not mate different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.”

There are some downright silly laws in the Jewish Torah. Of the above, I plead innocent to number one. I was forced by my parents to break number two sowing our family garden. According to my Chinese garment tags I violate the third one with some regularity, although I prefer 100% cotton.

Obedience to some of these laws would get me thrown under the jai… Continue

Sins and Blasphemies

“I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."

Strong words. Month old steeped coffee strong words! They proceeded from the mouth of Jesus in the well-worn Gospel of Mark.

In an odd scene that felt more like a campaign whistle stop than a supervisory visit, President Obama was greeted by exuberant cheers at the CIA, after releasing the Bush torture memos.… Continue

The Sabbath Will Find You

Martin Luther was waiting for a word from the Lord for his Sunday sermon. Everyday he set aside quiet time to tune his spiritual ears. Nothing. Being a man of devoted faith he continued his discipline of listening. Still, the deafening silence pervaded.

Sunday morning arrived. Martin Luther’s trust in the Spirit was beginning to waver. Would the Lord deliver? Did he need to help him along? As the hymn before the homily rang out Martin Luther realized he was on his own. No word from the Lord was… Continue

The Free Souls Connection

The Free Souls Connection is an initiative of the Free Souls Project with the intention of cultivating a community of Progressive media producers and users in the areas of Spirituality, Democracy and Ethics.

We invite original written, audio, and video creations in the lineage of Spiritual Humanism, the wellspring of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, forming the basis for a healthy integration of Spirituality, Democracy, and Ethics.

Rev. Theodore Parker expresses this trinity of American values marvelously. “There is what I call the American idea…a democracy, that is, a government of all the people, by all the people, for all the people; of course, a government of the principles of eternal justice, the unchanging law of God; for shortness' sake I will call it the idea of Freedom.”

Come Ministers, Radio Hosts, Musicians, Poets, Bloggers, Cartoonists, Commentators and all artists for the common good!

Let us support, nurture, encourage, and commune with one other and our sacred world.
