Chuck, thank you for sharing this. Inspirational that "people of faith" would get together to think of how to help. This makes me feel that there is hope. I wonder how these religions are reaching out to their membership to convey this idea? I im...

Good point, Chuck. So many businesses have lives of their own, which have nothing to do with the humans who work there. I always think of the Terminator movies, where the machines take over. This way lies madness. Banks were one of the first to em...

Chuck, Before my Mom died, I was keeping care of her money, which was in a Bank of America account. So I went to the local bank/Burger King branch and would stand in line and talk to the tellers. They had a big screened TV with Fox News going all...

Thanks for your note Bill. I am decrying the "cancers" of capitalism, not capitalism itself. Our practice of capitalism is not "free market" in any sense of the word. It is socialism for the rich - period. There is a way to practice a socially res...

I may be talking against the wind here, but I must object to using the word "capitalist" as the ultimate pejoritive, for the same reason as I would to the right using the words "liberal," "atheist," or "faggot" similarly. For myself, I am a libera...

Many Heavens, One Earth

"The world's faiths joined together in this cause could become the planet's largest civil society movement for change. With their unparalleled presence throughout the world, the world's religions could be the decisive force that helps top the scales in favor of a world of climate safety and justice for future generations.

These words were uttered by Olav Kjorven with the United Nations Development Program, during a summit of leading figures from nine of the world’s major religions. The meeting… Continue

A Seedling of Hope

"I'm taking a break from politics. I am deeply disillusioned and find I feel better if I don't follow current events right now."

This note is from a friend and dedicated supporter of my fledging prophetic efforts and an ardent yellow dog Democrat. A substantial part of me resonates deeply with this despair.

During the marathon election cycle I perpetually kept one eye wide open with candidate Obama’s political tent revivals. I didn’t chug the hope kool aid. The genetic idealist in me did howe… Continue

Where Are The Politicians Willing To Shoot The Moon For Good?

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

This haunting Jewish proverb rings with thunderous truth today in so many countries and arenas. It is tragically, literally illustrated in our struggle for American universal health care.

Help me understand this. Why are political warmongers & dictators the only ones willing to shoot the moon for their cause these days?

Since Korea every “conflict” for which we have sacrificed precious lives has been based on shoot the moon fear and exaggerat… Continue

“I Come To You In The Name of the Lord of Hosts”

“I come to you in the name of the Lord of Hosts.”

What an ominous declaration! These days, we educated, sophisticated, skeptical liberals would write the speaker off as a religious right nut case or as a delusional soul in need of proper medication.

You will likely be surprised to learn that this proclamation is from one of the most well know heroes of western lore. This confident boast emanated from the lips of David. You know him as the legendary underdog victor in David and Goliath.

To inv… Continue

I read your blog about "traditional marriage". I was very curious to read about your perspectives on gay marriage. It wasn't an topic we discussed on the National Mall on Jan. 20th. I really enjoyed reading it and I know for a fact that gay marriage doesn't threaten heterosexual marriage. I am a school teacher and all of my students know that I am gay and my 6th grade English class really wanted to meet my husband last year. Denmark was the first country to legalize same sex civil unions. The funny thing is that most Danes don't know that, but I remember reading an article about in my social studies class in the 11th grade in Newsweek Magazine.
Anyway, I am happy to be a part of the free souls community and I look forward to reading more of your blogs.

Chuck - I've figured out how to share full network creator rights with you. We can go over this as soon as we find time to get together re my previous comment...

Chuck - I've dug into Ning admin a little bit today. Your ID has "Administrator" access. But it turns out that you still don't have some of the privileges that the creator (me) does. Namely, the important ones still only accessible to me are the control panels for Network Access, Premium Services, and Feature Controls. Today you mentioned that people were having trouble seeing content in the site. The Access was set so that only registered (and logged in) members could see all site content. I changed that. Now, anyone (logged in or not) can see all content on the site.

We ought to get together some time soon and go over the other site management options & some of your enhancement ideas. In the mean time, I'll inquire w/Ning about whether or not its possible to promote you to site creator so that you have access to all management functions.

Actually, I do think that there is hope. Just as (I hope) it is obvious to see the difference in my attitude compare to my grandmother's, I think that my children have a much higher comfort level with difference than I do. My granddaughter is biracial and if my other two children wound up with spouses from other races it would not surprise me. Actually, I am not comfortable with the term 'race' at all since from a scientific point of view it seems to be primarily a factor of how close or far away from the equator your ancestors were. My bigger discomfort seems to come when people have different ways of behaving, customs, etc. But studies also show this is common and goes away with proximity.

Thanks for your reflection back, just imagine what this world would be like if each of us truly followed unique perspective we have. Those focused on individuals would be part of the individual response to personal neighbors, those who have a more universal perspective would work with organizations whose mission is to the wider community. Unfortunately, we tend to get overwhelmed and don't do much of anything with our insights either personally or corporately.

Chuck Freeman Chuck Freeman created this Ning Network.

The Free Souls Connection

The Free Souls Connection is an initiative of the Free Souls Project with the intention of cultivating a community of Progressive media producers and users in the areas of Spirituality, Democracy and Ethics.

We invite original written, audio, and video creations in the lineage of Spiritual Humanism, the wellspring of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, forming the basis for a healthy integration of Spirituality, Democracy, and Ethics.

Rev. Theodore Parker expresses this trinity of American values marvelously. “There is what I call the American idea…a democracy, that is, a government of all the people, by all the people, for all the people; of course, a government of the principles of eternal justice, the unchanging law of God; for shortness' sake I will call it the idea of Freedom.”

Come Ministers, Radio Hosts, Musicians, Poets, Bloggers, Cartoonists, Commentators and all artists for the common good!

Let us support, nurture, encourage, and commune with one other and our sacred world.
